Boxed copies of Nintendo Switch games are the biggest entertainment products of 2022 so far at UK retail, in terms of revenue generated.
A new report from the Entertainment Retailers Association shows that Switch game sales reached £88.7 million since January 1 – although this is 12.5% down when compared to this time last year.
PlayStation – combining physical games for both PS4 and PS5 – was the next highest games format at £79.6 million, up 6.5% year-on-year.
In 2021, PlayStation was second only to Switch but this year has to settle for third place after vinyl album sales grew 6.5% to £80.9 million.
Xbox software sales – encompassing both Xbox One and Series X|S boxed games – came in at No.7 with sales of £17.8 million, down 14.3%. It beats only PC, which saw sales drop 30.7% to £579,986.
Ahead of Xbox were CDs at £68.9 million, DVDs at £66.8million and Blu-Ray at £52.1 million. Only the latter grew when compared to this time in 2021, up 10%.
Combined, video games retail revenues of £186.6 million far outstrip music’s £149.8 million and film and TV’s £118.9 million.
