STONE RIDGE, N.Y. — The Movies With Spirit series will screen the drama “Merry Christmas” Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. at the Rondout Valley United Methodist Church at 25 Schoonmaker Lane
The film chronicles the true story of an unofficially declared truce by opposing soldiers in World War I.
On Christmas Eve in 1914, with Europe facing unprecedented slaughter, carnage and destruction, soldiers in a section of the Western Front, a 400-mile stretch weaving through France and Belgium lay down their weapons without approval from either side’s high command, a synopsis said.
French, German and Scottish British soldiers leave the cold muddy trenches and warily at first cross the no man’s land with each other and say Joyeux Noël,” “Frohe Weihnachten” and “Merry Christmas,” exchange chocolate, share photos of loved ones, sing carols, play soccer and pray, the description said.
The one-hour and 56-minute film is rated PG–13.
Attendees over age 12 are asked to contribute $10 a person.
