1899 is a mystery-horror series created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. You might recognize Friese and Odar as the creative geniuses behind the critically acclaimed Netflix series Dark. Back in June 2018, Friese and Odar signed an exclusive multiple-year overall deal with Netflix to produce new series and projects for the streamer. Then, in November 2018, it was announced that they would be setting1899 as their next Netflix project.
The mystery-horror series follows a mixed group of European immigrants as they board a steamship from London to New York City. But things go awry when they find another migrant ship drifting on the open sea. What was supposed to be a journey to a better life then turns into a complete nightmare.
The talented cast includes Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, Miguel Bernardeau, Maciej Musiał, Anton Lesser, Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, Rosalie Craig, Clara Rosager, Maria Erwolter, etc. So, is 1899 appropriate for kids to be watching? We answered this burning question below.
The mystery-horror series is rated TV-MA, meaning it’s intended to be viewed by mature audiences only. It was given this age rating for strong language, sexual violence, and smoking. The show will also contain graphic violence, the use of various weapons, blood, and the brutal murders of characters.
All of the content just listed would be considered inappropriate for younger kids to be watching. Overall, this show may not be suitable for ages 17 and under. We recommend watching it when the kids are tucked in and ready for bed. I promise that once you start this series, you will not want to be interrupted. So, make sure the kids are either asleep or occupied with a kids’ show or movie on Netflix while you binge 1899 to your heart’s content.
